High energy use isn't automatically waste. What matters is the purpose it serves. Bitcoin uses energy to secure a global, decentralised and censorship-resistant peer-to-peer monetary system - with no central control point and without a bank's permission.

Mining can also use energy that would otherwise barely be used or even curtailed. This turns surplus energy into a globally usable, digital good.
