Detailed description

Defund the State - the reformation of money

Two reformations, both on 31 October

On 31 October 1517, Martin Luther published his 95 theses, calling into question the authority and business models of a powerful institution.

Exactly 491 years later, on 31 October 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto published the Bitcoin whitepaper. Once again an existing monopoly of power was called into question - this time central control over our money.

Motif and meaning

"Defund the State" means taking away the state's ability to create money itself and to keep going into debt in its own, controlled currency. Because that's how political projects can be financed whose costs aren't immediately visible - up to and including wars.

Bitcoin counters this system with money that has fixed rules and a limited supply. The state cannot expand its supply at will. Spending would therefore have to be financed more directly, more transparently and in a way that can be justified to citizens again.

The sticker connects two reformations that began on the same date: Luther's reformation of the church and Bitcoin's reformation of money.

The book Bitcoin: Separation of Money and State explores the separation of money and state in depth.
